Situated 10 km far from Kathmandu valley below Shivapuri hill lies Budhanilkantha (Old blue throat) temple, a sacred pilgrimage of Hindus dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Believed to be a significant place for Hindus visiting Nepal, the main attraction of the temple is a 1400 old statue of Lord Vishnu that floats amid a pond. The statue depicts Lord Vishnu lying down on 11 Shesha Naag (Serpents) with his legs crossed which is the largest stone carving of Nepal that was sculpted out of a single block of black basalt stone. Some legends say the temple was built in the current site during the reign of seventh-century monarch Vishnugupta under Lichhavi King Bhimarjun Dev while others say it was found by a farmer & his wife when they were cultivating the land & struck the deity, the blood began to flow afterward & later it was recovered & placed in the right location. Thousands of Hindu devotees visit the temple every year during Haribodhini Ekadashi Mela that falls on the 11th day of Kartik (Oct-Nov) believing it to be the awakening day of Lord Vishnu. Witness the perfect blend of culture & history & take a short hike to Shivapuri hill if you’re up for the walk with some fresh air & a good view of the valley surrounded by hills & mountains.

We start our half-day tour to Budhanilkantha which is 8 km on the northern side of Kathmandu valley with a short and scenic drive from your hotel. Budhanilkantha, the area named after the sacred Vishnu temple Budhanilkantha which means, “Old Blue Throat” or the “Blue Throat”, is an interesting and beautiful place to visit overall. We arrive here in our private vehicle and then enter the sacred temple premise. After entering, we start observing the idols and temple surroundings. The long reclining Lord Vishnu statue lying on the 13 m (43 ft.) long water tank is believed to be carved in the 7th or 8th century in the Lichhavi period. Lord Vishnu is seen sleeping with his legs crossed and holding a conch shell, disc, club and bibhuti in his hands. We then observe other small shrines dedicated to Shiva, Ganesha, and Laxmi nearby. As this is a famous place for performing Hindu ritual activities like ritual thread ceremony, marriage and so on, we might even get an opportunity to view it. The main festival celebrated here is Haribodhani Ekadashi which falls in late October or early November, so if we go around this time, the temple may be crowded. You are free to observe the locals, interact with them and walk around the temple premise. After learning enough about the culture, history, architecture, folktales and temple overall, we bid farewell to sacred Budhanilkantha and drive back to the hotel, ending our half-day tour successfully.
Optional: You can add an extra day in this package to take a short hike to Shivapuri hill if you're up for the walk with some fresh air & a good view of the valley surrounded by hills & mountains.
